Monitoring the work of the European institutions

Monitoring the work of the European institutions

At Council level

This is traditionally the keystone of the Representation. Based on article 203 of the Treaty of Rome, the Brussels-Capital Region has direct access to the work of the Council: ministerial councils, Committee of Permanent Representatives (COREPER), technical groups and informal councils (regional policy, housing).

The Region is directly or indirectly involved in the various groupings of the Council:

  • Competition (Internal Market, Industry, Research)
  • Employment
  • Energy
  • Environment
  • Transport

Other institutions

The Representation monitors the legislative process from the Commission’s proposal to the decision’s publication in the Official Journal of the European Union. It follows the various steps in the procedure and the compulsory or optional interventions of the European Parliament, the Committee of the Regions and the European Economic and Social Committee.

The Representation also monitors the work of other European institutions and bodies, such as the European Investment Bank, European Ombudsman and the Court of Justice, according to the importance of the matter in question, its topicality or in response to special requests by bodies of the Brussels-Capital Region.

Special matters

The Representation monitors and participates in the developments relating to the following matters:

  • Future Regional Policy
  • Financial prospects of the Union
