Rent allowance : how to apply and eligibility requirements

Rent allowance is financial assistance designed to cover part of the rent while waiting for social housing to be allocated.

What are the conditions for receiving the rent allowance?

The conditions must be met on the day the application is submitted. 

  • you must not own a property (this applies to all members of your household) 
  • this allowance cannot be combined with other current rent assistance. 
  • you must be registered on a waiting list for social housing with a public service property company (SISP).

  • priority points on the social housing waiting list and income: 
Single-parent family (household consisting of a single adult and at least one dependant child) Other families

Annual income thresholds≤ €27.550,86²for a single person:
≤ €15.461,53³
for a multi-person house-hold:
≤ €20.895,43³

¹Annual income is the total income of all adult members of your household at the time of your application. For an application made in 2024, this is the taxable income as a whole and separately for 2021 (2022 tax year).
If this income exceeds the upper limits, the income as reported to the SLRB will be considered.

  • it is located in the Brussels-Capital Region and you officially reside there 
  • it is rented under a principal residence lease 
  • it is not rented through a social rental agency (AIS) or a public service property company (SISP). 
  • it is not owned by a member of your family up to a second degree relative 
  • the rent must not be socialised

Duration of the rent allowance

The rent allowance is granted for 5 years from the date of your application. 

After this initial 5-year period, the Administration will review your eligibility to continue receiving the allowance for a further 5 years.  

After these two periods, only households with a member aged 65 or over or a person recognised as having a disability (66% or 9 points) will be reassessed for a potential extension of the allowance.

The allowance can be applied for directly online via the citizen portal or using the application form.
