How to deal with noise nuisance: tips and legal advice

The Brussels-Capital Region is known for its high population density, a wide variety of economic, cultural and leisure activities and a dense transportation network. Noise is one of the inevitable consequences of this vibrant environment. When noise disturbances originate from neighbours, it can complicate neighbourly relations.

Always prioritise dialogue

Do you think your neighbours make too much noise? Always prioritise dialogue and try to reach an amicable agreement: it's the simplest and most cost-effective solution. You can also involve a third party to facilitate discussions, such as a property management company, building manager, neighbourhood committee and community services or associations.

Mediators are also available in every Brussels municipality through the Opens in new windowBrussels-Capital Region's network of Public Mediation Services for Interpersonal Conflicts

Noise complaints

The Opens in new windowregional Info Noise portal contains all the information, procedures and complaint forms you need to deal with noise issues. Information is categorised by noise source (transport, neighbours, shops and businesses, leisure and services). The site explains how to file a complaint if dialogue has not resolved the issue.

With regards to neighbours, the information varies depending on the type of disturbance:
