A state-of-the-art fire station in Ixelles for Brussels Fire Brigade

Brussels Fire Brigade and Beliris have opened the new fire station on the Delta site in Ixelles. This modern building strengthens safety in the capital and provides our fire and ambulance crews with optimised working and living conditions.

New fire station Delta

A pilot project for the modernisation of Brussels Fire Brigade stations

The new fire station was designed as a pilot project and includes a first for Belgium: an innovative system for decontaminating personnel and intervention clothing after incidents. Separate circulation routes for “dirty” and “clean” zones, combined with an independent ventilation system, ensure a safe and hygienic working environment. This infrastructure improves both service delivery to the public and the working conditions of station staff.

A modern and sustainable building

The new fire station covers 2,700 m² spread over five floors—three times larger than the previous building. It includes a garage with space for five fire engines and four ambulances.

Living and leisure areas have been designed with the wellbeing of emergency responders in mind: double bedrooms, separate sleeping areas for men and women, spacious fitness facilities, and a training tower enabling realistic operational training.

The building was conceived with sustainability at its core. It is equipped with solar panels and a heat pump, features green roofs, harvests rainwater, and filters vehicle wash water. The landscaping also promotes biodiversity across the site.

The new infrastructure replaces the former Delta station, built in the 1970s, which had become too small and outdated to meet current standards for liveability, safety and environmental performance.

A fire station in harmony with its surroundings

The façade has been given a green hue that complements the surrounding university buildings. In this way, the fire station blends into its urban environment while providing a highly functional space in the service of the community.

The studies were carried out by ORG Permanent Modernity, in collaboration with Util and Ingenium. Construction works were completed by contractor Artes TWT, at a total cost of €10.69 million, over a period of approximately two years.

This new Delta fire station is far more than a building: it is a fully fledged operational tool serving the safety of Brussels residents and the wellbeing of our teams. We deliberately chose a modern, efficient and sustainable infrastructure that addresses both the current and future challenges of our profession. The integration of decontamination circuits, separate ventilation systems and purpose‑designed living spaces represents a major step forward for the health and working conditions of our firefighter‑paramedics. This pilot project forms part of a broader vision for the modernisation of our service, in which operational efficiency goes hand in hand with quality of working life. Finally, this fire station symbolises our daily commitment: to be ready at all times to respond, under the best possible conditions, to protect the population.
