Recovery

Among its missions, Brussels Fiscality ensures the recovery of debts.

  1. For its own taxes and fines, when a taxpayer fails to pay the amounts claimed by our services.
  2. On behalf of other Brussels administrations.

The recovery process takes place in several stages:

First stage: reminder or formal notice

Initially, if you are in default of payment, you will receive a reminder.
In 2023, Brussels Fiscality sent 194,824 reminders.

For certain fines, you may also receive a formal notice: this is the last warning before moving on to forced recovery proceedings.

Second stage: forced recovery

Failure to pay the debt will result in Brussels Fiscality initiating forced recovery, which may require the intervention of a court bailiff.

The court bailiff will inform you of the amounts you still owe by serving you with a constraint order. If you fail to pay, the bailiff may seize your assets (furniture, salary, house, etc.). Forced recovery procedures are regulated by law, and Brussels Fiscality ensures that all taxpayers are treated equally and fairly.

Once your file has been forwarded to a bailiff, he or she will become your main point of contact. All contact with the administration will then be handled by him or her.

The recovery charges incurred by bailiffs must be paid by the taxpayers.

If you have any questions about your file, for example about your tax bill, its dispatch, the tax assessment, or payment plans, please contact your bailiff first. Their contact details are on your correspondence.
