Cities 4 Co-housing: Co-creating Affordable Living, Empowering Communities

The Cities 4 Co-housing Network is an URBACT Innovation Transfer Network dedicated to transforming the way we approach affordable housing. Anchored in the anti-speculative Community Land Trust (CLT) model, the network draws inspiration from the innovative CALICO project in the Brussels Capital Region, aiming to replicate its success in five partner cities across Europe.

Empowering Communities with CALICO’s Legacy

The original CALICO project in the Brussels Capital Region integrates a range of community-building principles that extend beyond housing to create environments where residents feel connected, valued, and active in their neighborhoods.

The Cities 4 Co-housing network builds on these principles by:

  • Promoting mutual care: Encouraging a culture of cooperation and shared responsibility among residents.
  • Facilitating neighborhood integration: Making sure that residents from diverse backgrounds have equal opportunities to integrate into the community.
  • Advancing gender equality: Ensuring that all genders are empowered and represented in decision-making processes.
  • Fostering a sense of belonging: Creating spaces where individuals feel they truly belong and contribute to the well-being of the community.

These values will be embedded in every initiative and project that the network supports, ensuring that the Cities 4 Co-housing ethos is lived, not just planned.

Conclusion

The Cities 4 Co-housing Network is more than just a housing network, it is a movement that aims to change the way we think about living spaces and the communities we create within them. Through collaboration, innovation, and a shared commitment to affordability, mutual care, and equality, we are working towards a future where everyone has a place to call home.

Together, we are co-creating affordable living and empowering communities across Europe.
