Long-term bicycle hire for everyday mobility
Brussels Mobility brings together French cities and Brussels-based stakeholders to share experiences, compare models and exchange views.
An increasing number of cities are seeking ways to genuinely integrate cycling into the daily lives of their residents. Not only for short trips, but also for commuting, family travel and other regular journeys. Long-term bicycle hire is therefore rapidly gaining in importance.
In several French cities, this approach has become, in recent years, a genuine mobility tool: residents are offered a bicycle for several months, at a fixed rate and with tailored support. The outcome? More people are using bicycles on a regular basis, including those who had previously perceived obstacles to cycling.
But what makes such a system successful? What choices do cities make regarding target audiences, pricing, bicycle types and services? And how can they address concrete user needs?
During this study afternoon, Brussels Mobility brings together French cities and Brussels-based stakeholders to share experiences, compare models and exchange views relevant to the Brussels context.
This study afternoon offers:
- Concrete practical experiences from French cities that have been focusing on long-term bicycle hire for several years
- An understanding of user needs: what do (future) cyclists really expect from such a system?
- A source of inspiration for strategy and practice: how can long-term bicycle hire contribute to affordability, physical accessibility and the everyday use of cycling?
- Exchanges and networking with cities, operators, associations and mobility professionals
Whether you work on policy development, the operational roll-out of cycling services, or social and local mobility projects, this study afternoon will provide you with insights that go beyond theory.
At the same time, Brussels Mobility is launching a non-binding market consultation (Request for Information – RFI) with the aim of developing a public long-term bicycle hire system in the Brussels Capital Region. All interested market actors (companies, consortia, non-profit organisations, social economy organisations, etc.) with relevant experience or expertise in bicycle hire, mobility services or related fields are invited to take part in this RFI. The RFI can be consulted here (External linkBOSA - eProcurement link). The study afternoon of 13 May forms part of this process.
