What are our taxes used for?

Discover how the taxes and duties collected by Brussels Fiscality fund projects that benefit everyone, aiming for a more supportive and sustainable Region.

Funding of the Brussels-Capital Region

The Brussels-Capital Region has authority over a wide range of areas, including transport, employment, economic development, and social protection.

For example, the Brussels-Capital Region is involved in the following missions:

  • Maintenance and modernisation of the public transport network
  • Environmental protection and maintenance of regional parks and gardens, such as Parc du Cinquantenaire/Jubelpark and Bois de la Cambre/Ter Kamerenbos
  • Management and payment of child benefits
  • Assisting job seekers and entrepreneurs living in Brussels
  • Supporting low- and middle-income families in becoming homeowners

Funding of municipalities

Taxes and duties collected by Brussels Fiscality also contribute to the funding of Brussels municipalities.

For certain taxes, Brussels Fiscality is responsible for collecting money from taxpayers on behalf of the 19 Brussels municipalities.

For example, when you pay the property tax, approximately 3/4 of the amount is transferred to your municipal administration.

Municipalities are responsible for maintaining public order, renovating certain roads, and building infrastructure such as sports centres and nursing homes.
