Renovation of metro stations
In 1969, the first underground section was inaugurated between Schuman and De Brouckère, with 6 tramway stations open to the public. The first heavy metro line was inaugurated on 20 September 1976. Since then, the number of stations has multiplied. The Brussels network currently comprises 69 stations. It is operated by the STIB and Brussels Mobility manages the infrastructure.
Today, metro stations are subject to a sustained policy of infrastructure renovation to meet new standards and user needs. These renovations consist either of major refurbishments (such as De Brouckère) or functional refurbishments such as the installation of lifts, ticket offices, escalators, etc.
Although not very visible, other station equipment has also been the subject of increased maintenance and renewal in recent years to ensure the efficiency of the infrastructure.
