Boulevard Reyers

In study

Transforming the current thoroughfare into an urban boulevard to take better account of active modes of travel (pedestrians, cyclists) and improve road safety.

Bruxelles Mobilité is going to remodel the boulevard Auguste Reyers between the place Meiser (which is also being redeveloped as part of another project) and the square Vergote (included) to create a real urban boulevard, with more space for pedestrians and cyclists, improving road safety and developing quality public spaces!

The aim is to improve the current provisional layout by giving the roadway the status of an urban boulevard: a main artery, with 2x2 lanes for cars on the central roadway, while providing an equitable distribution of space for each mode of travel (pedestrians, people with reduced mobility, cyclists, public transport) as well as numerous safe crossing opportunities.

Cycle paths, pedestrian comfort and safe crossings

The current layout provides only a short section of two-way cycle track on the east side of the boulevard between Avenue de Roodebeek and Place Meiser. The proposed cycle facilities are a clear improvement and meet Boulevard Reyers' status as a cycle speedway: cyclists will benefit from continuous, safe infrastructure on both sides of the boulevard, either via long sections of two-way cycle track 3 to 4 m wide, or via a proper "bicycle street" on the side of the boulevard.

The 2 subways linking the east and west sides of the boulevard will be removed, as they are difficult or impossible to access for people with reduced mobility and cyclists, and pose a public safety problem. They will be replaced by crossings secured by traffic lights on the surface. Throughout the boulevard, the pavements are being widened and pedestrian crossings are being made safer by means of platforms.

A high-quality public space

The redesign of the public space will enable Boulevard Reyers to play a key role in the landscape/ecological continuity between Square Vergote and, further downstream from Place Meiser, Josaphat Park. By the end of the project, 18% of the area will have been demineralised and 76 new trees planted.

The central berm will be adorned with shrubbery, and the widened lateral berms will be planted with lush "valleys" to help manage rainwater.

The lighting along the entire boulevard will be renewed, providing an opportunity to consider how best to integrate the landscape with urban lighting rather than motorway lighting, while ensuring the safety of the area.

Coordination with other projects/worksites in the area

There are other projects along the same corridor. These projects have been conceived together and are fully compatible. The aim is to treat the entire Reyers - Meiser - Wahis - Lambermont stretch in a comprehensive and coordinated manner.
