Bicycle path chaussée de Vilvorde

In execution

A key section of Brussels' cycle network is getting a makeover! An ingenious project is improving safety and comfort for cyclists. Work is scheduled to be completed in summer 2025.

Linked worksites

The section of chaussée de Vilvorde between the De Trooz and Van Praet bridges is very popular with cyclists. However, this old track is less than two metres wide for both directions of traffic, which is insufficient to ensure optimal comfort and safety for cyclists.

Today, Brussels Mobility is optimising the space without impacting the environment. Rather than splitting the area into two overly narrow spaces, it was decided to create a shared area for pedestrians and cyclists. To maximise the available width, all obstacles (such as street lighting) are being moved to the tree-lined berm, thus guaranteeing greater fluidity and comfort for cyclists.

Given the low pedestrian traffic on this 1.2 km long axis, this solution seems the most appropriate. Work began in mid-March 2025. The new infrastructure should be operational by summer 2025.
