Freight transport
The Brussels-Capital Region faces the same challenges as every big city and region in Europe: identifying and implementing efficient sustainable logistical management solutions.
Brussels businesses can take advantages of multimodal transport solutions combining road, rail, water and air for their foreign trade. The two key facilities for freight traffic in the Brussels-Capital Region are the Port of Brussels and Brussels Airport.
Port of Brussels
The river and sea port of Brussels is crucial to the economy of the Region. Inland navigation is a great alternative for exporters and importers, considering its good environmental credentials and low cost.
With a water surface area of 80 hectares and stretching for 14km, the Port of Brussels accommodates ocean-going vessels up to 4,500 tonnes.
Almost five million tonnes of goods pass through the Port of Brussels annually. The multimodal platform ensures that goods are transshipped to rail and road immediately.
The Port of Brussels aspires to play a key role in the European transports network. As a founder member of the EFIP (European Federation of Inland Ports), it aims to affirm the economic role of inland ports and the development of multimodal transport in Europe.
