Enhancing regional data

Data sharing between the various public players and the development of innovative models (AI, Data Science, Advanced Analytics) encourages the emergence of new uses and services that add value for the Region as a whole.

Data enhancement is based on three pillars:

  • Management - Deploying tools that enable data management
  • Sharing - Ensuring this data and data protection measures are made available
  • Accessibility - Implementing security policies across the entire life cycle of the data

Sharing open data in the Region

Datastore is the IT portal that centralises the open data in the Brussels-Capital Region. Based on open data, the platform is:

  • Accessible to all citizens, businesses and administrations without registration
  • Supplied by municipal users, public interest organisations, administrations, etc.
  • Updated in real time

In practical terms, it is possible to browse the portal, search and consult data and web services, and create a profile to make suggestions or subscribe to the newsletters of one or more organisations or one or more datasets.

Accessing authentic sources

Fidus is an integrator of data from authentic sources in the Brussels-Capital Region, and allows a client application to connect to a provider's online services. Fidus organizes the data exchange of public services, at the regional or federal level.

The objective of Fidus is to manage the electronic exchange of data between public bodies, in accordance with the "only-once" principle (meaning the user only provides their data to a public body once).

Data protection

Private companies and public institutions are required to comply with a number of strict rules under the GDPR, the European Data Protection Regulation.
This involves:

  • The security of the information processed
  • The confidentiality, integrity and availability of the data

Several services are available to the institutions to help ensure they are in compliance:

  • Advice from a DPO/ISA (data protection officer/information security advisor)
  • GDPR-compliance analysis
  • Awareness-raising and coaching programme tailored to all their needs

Access to regional cartographic data

UrbIS is a set of the Brussels-Capital Region's geographic databases and online services that enable this data to be used easily. UrbIS is accessible to all. It is free to use and covered by an Open Data licence. Two types of solutions are available, depending on the needs and resources:

  • UrbIS data: a set of cartographic and alphanumeric data specific to the territory of the Brussels Region
  • UrbIS applications & services: downloadable interactive cartographic applications and cartographic tools without download.
  • Documents published by the administrations on this portal (Studies, analyses, brochures, guides, reports, press).

  • Lists, data, figures, statistics, databases, cartographic data, etc.
