Safety rules and prevention

Fire safety starts with good preparation. With clear rules, adapted infrastructure and preventive measures, we reduce the risk of incidents and limit the consequences.

What is fire prevention?

Fire prevention includes all measures aimed at:

  • prevent fire, detect it early and limit its spread;
  • alerting emergency services;
  • rescue victims and protect property.

In this section you can read more about the legal requirements.

Safety regulations

Federal Basic Standards and Regional Supplements

  • The Opens in new windowRoyal Decree of 7 July 1994 contains the federal basic standards for fire prevention in all new and expanded buildings.
  • Regional, municipal and sectoral standards supplement these rules, depending on the building function or location.

What about renovation or repurposing?

There are no explicit legal requirements for renovations. That is why the Brussels Fire Brigade provides additional conditions for advice via permits, based on the experience and safety standards from the basic standards. These apply mainly to buildings with multiple residential units.

Inspections and advice

  • Any new or renovated building must first undergo an inspection visit before occupancy.
  • The Brussels Fire Brigade can also provide preventive advice on events, permits or construction works via the Opens in new windowapplication form.
