CO
What to do in case of carbon monoxide poisoning? This silent danger kills hundreds of people every year, although it is rarely mentioned in the films.
Why is CO so dangerous?
- Because it is not noticeable. It is colorless, odorless and tasteless.
- Because your blood absorbs CO 200 times better than oxygen. CO takes the place of oxygen in the blood. It is as if the victims were "choking".
How does CO appear in you?
The CO is formed in case of poor combustion of fuels. For example, gas, fuel oil, wood and pellets are fuels that are often used for heating or hot water in a home.
Do you use an open fire or a coal stove? Do you heat your home with gas or oil? Do you use a gas water heater? In this case, you run a real danger of CO poisoning. It is therefore important to take precautions.
What are the symptoms of CO poisoning?
- You suddenly have a headache.
- You have nausea.
- You feel tired.
- You feel like you are going to faint.
Inhaling a high dose of CO is fatal! Be aware of your own symptoms and those of members of your household. During the winter period, do not think too quickly that it is a flu or cold.
Other warning signs:
- Do several people or animals complain at the same time?
- Do these complaints occur at certain times (while bathing, showering or doing the dishes)?
- Do these complaints decrease in the presence of fresh air or when you are outside?
- Do you notice any soot deposits on the walls near gas water heaters?
- Do you notice abnormally high condensation and humidity in the house?
- For the gas, pay attention to the colour of the flames. Yellow flames are a sign of poor combustion. The flames must be blue.
What to do in case of CO poisoning?
- Think about your own safety first!
- Open doors and windows.
- Get out as quickly as possible and make sure everyone leaves the room.
- Call the emergency number 112
Prevent OC poisoning
- Ensure there is sufficient fresh air by leaving the windows or gates open 24 hours a day.
- Have the heaters serviced by a professional each year.
- Have the chimney cleaned by a certified technician each year.
- Install a CO detector.
Buy a CO detector
- Buy a CO detector with the packaging bearing the CE label and the European certification (NBN) EN 50291.
- Preferably buy a CO detector with a life of 5 to 10 years.
- Always read the manual carefully and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
