Where does tap water in Brussels come from?

It is supplied by VIVAQUA, a public company, which produces and distributes drinking water in the Brussels Region. The company also collects waste water via the sewerage system and fights against floods by building storm basins in particular.

Every day, VIVAQUA supplies 330.000 m³ of drinking water to 2.25 million inhabitants, including all the inhabitants of Brussels.

VIVAQUA brings water from its 26 catchment sites to the capital's homes.

  • The water produced by VIVAQUA comes from groundwater or surface water catchments.
  • Then the water is stored in large reservoirs.
  • Before reaching your home, drinking water travels tens of kilometres. On its way, the water is strictly controlled by VIVAQUA's laboratory. Only water of irreproachable quality reaches your home.
  • Waste water is collected in the sewers and transported to the sewage treatment plants before being discharged into its natural environment.

In the Brussels Region, you can safely drink tap water: it is strictly controlled from the catchment site up to your home. Drinking water must meet over 65 quality criteria set by the Regions and Europe. VIVAQUA's laboratory carries out approximately 300.000 analyses a year.

If you have just moved to the capital, VIVAQUA will probably be one of the companies you will have to contact.
