Urban Renewal Directorate

The urban renewal directorate of Brussels Planning and Heritage

Within the frame of an active urban development and social cohesion improvement approach, the Urban Renewal Directorate aims to combat eyesores and to repair the urban fabric. At Brussels Planning and Heritage (formerly Brussels Urban Development), the Urban Renewal Directorate attempts to find a synergy with all the stakeholders involved in the process of implementing its programmes and offers regulatory adaptations in order to develop and optimise urban renewal tools.

In order to achieve these goals, it ensures the following missions:

  1. The monitoring of Sustainable Neighbourhood Contracts (CQD) which work according to three priorities: the construction or renovation of housing, the reuse of public spaces and actions that target social cohesion (training, socio-professional integration, etc.)
  2. The coordination of Urban Renovation Contracts (CRU), concerning territories with a lower population density than CQD, located within municipal boundaries, on the edge of the urban divide and with a focus on the public space and the urban network
  3. The monitoring of the City Policy (PV) according to two priorities: local development (renovation of isolated abandoned buildings and renovation of small-scale damages in the regional public space) and the development of neighbourhoods (similar to CQD)
  4. The granting of housing renovation grants and grants for the renovation of facades
  5. The renovation of isolated residences belonging to Municipalities and Public Social Welfare Centres (CPAS) through the allocation of subsidies which aim to produce housing
  6. The fight against abandoned residences via a financial aid for municipalities which acquire, renovate and allocate these residences mainly for housing
  7. The monitoring of the rental management of housing belonging to municipalities or Public Social Welfare Centres (CPAS) renovated with the help of regional grants
  8. The financial monitoring of urban renewal operations carried out by citydev.brussels
  9. Information and awareness-raising among the general public.
