Water quality
Water is a precious resource that is used for many different things: mains water, waterways and industrial production to name a few. In the Brussels-Capital Region, the Société Bruxelloise de Gestion de l'Eau (SBGE) has been responsible for the public treatment of waste water since 2006.
VIVAQUA is the water company in the Brussels-Capital Region. As a fully public company, VIVAQUA is at the source of the drinking water that is daily brought into your home.
In the Brussels Region, VIVAQUA reads the meters, sends the invoices and maintains the distribution pipelines and the network of sewers.
Wastewater treatment plants
There are two wastewater treatment plants in the Brussels-Capital region – one in the north and one in the south.
The Bruxelles-Sud plant
The Bruxelles-Sud plant, which opened in 2000, is located on the boundary between Anderlecht and Forest. It treats around one third of all wastewater in Brussels (360,000 inhabitant equivalents).
The Bruxelles-Nord plant
Waste water from the Nord and Woluwe basins are treated at the Bruxelles-Nord plant, which has a larger capacity of 1,100,000 inhabitant equivalents.

Annual water consumption in the Brussels-Capital Region is around 60 million cubic metres.
Mains water must meet 55 different quality criteria. The World Health Organization (WHO) sets the basic standards. The European Union has introduced even stricter demands, which are in force in the three regions of Belgium. Water quality is constantly monitored. In the event of a problem the water companies will alarm users immediately.
