Support for research in Brussels

The Economy and Employment Contract (2005) and the Regional Plan for Innovation (2006) express the ambitions of the Brussels-Capital Region in research and innovation. To achieve these ambitions more quickly the Region has created Research in Brussels (RIB), whose main tasks are as follows:

  • Promoting technological innovation and research initiatives and infrastructure in the Brussels-Capital Region
  • Strengthening the centres of scientific excellence and stimulating high-tech activities in three sectors:
ICT information and communication technology, life sciences and the environment
  • Conducting studies on the research climate in the Brussels-Capital Region with the aim of developing a coherent, targeted research policy
  • Developing a platform for the actors involved in scientific research: businesses, investors, organisations, researchers
  • Interesting young people in science and technology, and motivating them to embrace a career in science in order to create a breeding ground for young researchers

RIB has a partnership with Innoviris, the Brussels institute for research and innovation. It promotes the grants INNOVIRIS awards for scientific research, innovation and product development.
