Brussels representations abroad

Brussels representations abroad
External or international relations of the Brussels-Capital Region are used to defend the interests of the people of Brussels in the European Union, to develop relations with other cities and regions and to promote the image of Brussels abroad.

The external relations of the Brussels-Capital Region are built on three mainstays:

When the Belgian constitution was revised in 1993 the three regions were given extensive international responsibilities. What are the international responsibilities of the Brussels-Capital Region?

  • Signing exclusive international treaties: the Brussels-Capital Region is entitled to enter into international accords with other cities, regions or even countries
  • Representing the Brussels-Capital Region in the European Union
  • Representing the Brussels-Capital Region in international organisations
  • Representing the Brussels-Capital Region abroad in the economic and commercial spheres. Specifically, this concerns economic development within the framework of foreign trade.
