Monument and Sites Directorate

The monument and sites directorate is tasked with the protection of built heritage through the application of legal measures on classification, maintenance and assessment.

The general challenge of the Monument and Sites Directorate is to preserve and integrate the regional cultural heritage into contemporary life and maintain it in an appropriate environment.

The notion of cultural heritage covers all property with a historical, archaeological, artistic, aesthetic, scientific, social, technical or folklore interest, without any chronological limit, namely: monuments, complexes, sites, archaeological sites, movable heritage and intangible heritage.

In this context, the Monument and Sites Directorate ensures the following missions:

  • The implementation and regular updating of heritage inventories
  • The legal protection of the heritage via registration decrees on the property protection and classification list which appears in a register
  • The monitoring of maintenance, restoration or rehabilitation works on the protected heritage from the planning development permit through to the end of works and the allocation of any subsidies
  • The implementation of archaeological excavations as well as the conservation and promotion of the archaeological heritage discovered in the Region
  • Participation in European and international projects in order to encourage cooperation and the exchange of information or good practices between States
  • The conservation and promotion of its documentary resources
  • Information and awareness-raising among the general public about the value and role of heritage in society via publications, exhibitions, conferences and activities.

The Monument and Sites Directorate also collaborates in the regional planning policy, in particular through the advice it gives on planning permits within consultative commissions. It also ensures the secretariat for the Royal Commission of Monuments and Sites.
